As for the age of the pond, it is said that it may have been built by the Romans, or perhaps by the Suebi, and used for some kind of sacred ritual. However, it is also possible that it dates back to the Middle Ages and may simply have served as a watering place for horses and livestock in an area of heavy passage. The abundance of streams and springs throughout the area, however, makes this latter possibility less certain.
